William Henry Forsyth was the son of Alpha Layson Forsyth and Lucinda Ann Witt. He was born on 28 November 1845, on the family farm in Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois. He died on 11 May, 1871, at his farm in LaPrairie, Adams County, Illinois. William is found in the 23 Nov 1850 Federal Illinois Census for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois at age 5 and in the 1860 census at age 15 1/2. He married Martha on 29 November, 1865. Their marriage license was obtained on 23 November, 1865. Note that "Marriages of Adams County, IL Vol. II" lists the date as 29 December, 1865, but this date was obviously misread. Martha listed her marriage date as 30 November, 1865 in her own bible. William died of tuberculosis at the age of 26 years 5 months and 13 days. He is buried in the Forsyth Cemetery located on his father's farm in Hancock County, Illinois. The cemetery has 2 tombstones bearing his name. The first is the 8 foot tall marble spire, and it appears to have been intended that the four sides would contain the names of him, his wife, and his 2 living children; however, his name is the only one that appears there. On the base of the stone is inscribed "FORSYTH". The inscription on the north side of the stone reads: WILLIAM H. FORSYTH. Died May 11, 1871. AGED 26 y's. 5 m's. 13 d's. How many hopes lie buried here. The smaller stone located over what appears to be his grave, reads: WILLIAM H. FORSYTH DIED May 11, 1871. Aged 26 yrs. 5 mo. 13 ds. Martha Lurinda McFarland was the daughter of William Madison McFarland and Eliza McFarland. She was born on 10 January, 1846, in Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois. She died on 20 March, 1920, at 83 Duffield Ave, Quincy, Illinois, and is buried in Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, Illinois. She is not buried alongside her husband in the family's cemetery, probably because the land was no longer owned by her immediate relatives. Martha is found in the 23 November, 1850 Federal Illinois Census for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois at the age of 4 and as the daughter of William Madison McFarland and Eliza McFarland. There is some confusion over her middle name. It has been variously stated as Larinda be her grandson's wife in the "Forsythe-Humphrey Story" and "A Book of Memories", as Lucinda by "The History of Adams County, Illinois" in the entry for her bible (which I do not understand, since I have color copies of her bible's pages, and they are different than those found in this book. Since this bible is her father's could she have had a second bible?), and S. in "Marriages of Adams County, IL Vol. II" and the online index. In the bible pages that I have seen, the name is clearly written in cursive as 'Lurinda'. The cursive 'r' has been verified to match other writing in the bible, and has been shown to not match her cursive 'c'. Several relatives have viewed these pages, and all agree that the name is most definitely "Lurinda". Martha died at around 9:30 in the morning on 5 March, 1920 at the home of her son Joel Madison Forsyth at 83 Duffield Ave, in Quincy, Illinois. Funeral services were held at 2:30 Sunday afternoon at Grace Episcopal Church in Galesburg, Illinois, of which she was a member, with Rev. W. P. Foley officiating. "She was an invalid for the two years previous to her passing, and died from an attack of neuralgia of the heart. She never complained during her illness but was patient and thankful for all that was done for her. She was a kind christian woman and was a gentle and loving mother" - from her obituary. She is buried at Linwood Cemetery, Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Her grandson's wife states her death as 1919 so possibly the "Statewide Death Index 1916 - 1950" has the incorrect year. She had lived with her husband on their farm in LaPrairie, Illinois. Her husband died when she was only 25 years old. She never remarried. After her husband died, she remained on the farm, and raised her children there. The 1880 Federal Illinois Census lists her in La Prairie, Adams County, Illinois at age 34. When her sons became adults, they moved off the farm to Galesburg, Illinois to find work. Martha then spent her winters with her eldest son William Marion in Galesburg. After William Marion died, she moved to Quincy, Illinois, and spent her winters with her son Joel, also in Galesburg. In later years she lived with her son Joel at 83 Duffield Avenue, in Quincy, Illinois. She is listed in the 1910 Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois Plat Book as M.L. Forsythe, and owned about 10 acres in Sec. 16 Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois. This would have been part of her father's original homestead. She owned another appox. 10 acres a few miles to the west. The second section may well have been the Forsyth's original homestead. On 27 August, 1881, she petitioned the courts to become her son Alpha's legal guardian. The courts had appointed her father-in-law, Alpha Forsyth, the legal guardian until Alpha, the younger, was over the age of 14, at which time she was allowed to submit the petition. Granting of this petition meant that Alpha, the younger, was then entitled to 80 acres of his deceased father's estate, which apparently his grandfather, Alpha, being the heretofore guardian, was in possesion of. William and Martha had 3 children: William Marion Forsyth (5 Mar 1871 - 26 Nov 1904) m. Margaret Scully Alpha Layson "Alphie" (24 Jul 1866 - 30 Jul 1884) Joel Madison "Joe" (1 Sep 1868 - 5/6 Jun 1939) m. 16 Jul 1891, Elizabeth O'Hara Alphie was also buried in the Forsyth Cemetery. His stone reads: Alpha L. son of William H and Martha L Born July 24, 1866 died July 30, 1884 Joel Madison married Elizabeth O'Hara (1874-1932) on July 16, 1891, and they had a sons Forrest James Forsyth (18 January 1896-1 October 1955). All three are buried at St. Joseph's Cemetery, in Galesburg, Illinois. Forrest served in the Army during WWI. |

It is unknown who Edmund Scully's parents were. He was born on May 6, 1842, in county Cork, Ireland. On March 18, 1911, he died of a strangulated hernia at his home of 888 S. Academy St. in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, and is buried there in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Margaret Godsil was the daughter of William Patrick Godsel and Mary Reily. She was born on December 3, 1847, in the Parish of Aghada, near Dublin, Ireland. She died April 9, 1907 also at her home on 888 Abingdon Street, Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. She is buried alongside her husband. Edmund immigrated to this country on May 22, 1866 aboard the Virginia, and came to Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. On the same vessel was Michael Godsil, the eldest brother of Margaret Godsil. According to Patrick Henry Godsil's obituary, the brother of Margaret Godsil, their family immigrated to this country in 1864. According to the 1900 United States Census for Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, she immigrated in 1868, however there is a marriage record in Galesburg between Edmond Scully and Margaret Gartchell in 1867, and their first child was born in 1868, so she must have immigrated earlier. Family history states that apparently Margaret's parents did not want Edmund to marry their daughter, but he followed her to America, and married her anyway. Edmund Scully married Margaret Godsil on May 20, 1867, in St. Patrick's Church, Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. Edmund and Margaret had 10 children, all born in Galesburg, Knox County, Illlinois: Mary (1868 - 1913) m. Charles Wilson Ellen "Nell" L. (1869 - 1940) m. 3 Apr 1888, Knox County, IL, Jackson "Jack" L. Sipes Anna "Annie" (31 Dec 1869 - 2 Oct 1948) never married John (abt 1871 - bef 3 Jan 1883) Margaret (1873-1954) m. William Marion Forsyth William H. (1 Mar 1874 - 2 Jul 1945) m. Josephine F. O'Brien Edward D. (11 Feb 1876 - 27 Feb 1901) never married James Phillip (16 Jan 1879 - 15 Aug 1958) m. Antonia Julia Weatzel Catherine "Kate" (7 Feb 1880 - 5 Jul 1949) m. John "Jack" Farrell ( - Sep 1959) John J. (3 Jan 1883 - 9 Aug 1929) never married Daniel "Dan" (1884 - 1948) m. Clara E. _____ The family is found in the Federal Illinois Census of July 1870, in Galesburg, Knox, County, Illinois. Neither of their ages can be made clearly. They are next found in the 1880 Federal Illinois Census in the 5th Ward, Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. They are both listed age age 35 which is suprising since they were born almost 5 years apart. She would have been about 34 and he about 38. In the 1900 census, they are both listed as 54 years of age. She would have been 52 and he 56. It is interesting that she listed his birthdate as unknown and her own incorrectly as 1845 (which incidently matches the age of 54). She also listed her immigration date as 1868 when she was in Galesburg by at least 1867 and most likely immigrated in 1864. Lastly, the 1910 census lists his age as 64. I wonder if the birth years on the tombstone are incorrect, and they were both born in 1845. There is some confusion over Edmund’s first name. It is listed variously as Edmund, Edmond in the "Illinois Statewide Marriage Index", Edward in the 1870, 1880, 1900, and 1910 censuses, and his wife's obituary. The ships log appears to be Edward, but may also be Edmund. His daughter's death certificate says Edwin, but was written by his grandson's wife. In any case, his gravestone says 'Edmund'. Possibly he simply went by Ed, and left it to various recorders to fill in the blanks. There is also some confusion over the spelling of Margaret's last name. It is listed variously as Godsil and Godsell by her grandaughter Leona Wilson, and Gartchell in the "Illinois Statewide Warriage Index". The last spelling is obviously a gross error either in transcription, or in the county clerk’s recording of an Irish accent. The 'Godsell' spelling is not uncommon, and was written by her granddaughter, so cannot be discarded lightly. Edmund was employed as a blacksmith for the Chicago Burlington & Quincy railroad in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois, and the aforementioned censuses list him as a laborer. Nick Hyslop through the Mallow Centre, located the family of John Scully and Elizabeth Pomphret of the Ballymacoda Parish in Diocese of Cloyne, county Cork, Ireland, but there is no evidence that he is the son listed: Their children were: John (bp 16 Feb 1839) Edmund (bp 30 Apr 1842) Mary (bp 6 Sep 1844) Catherine (bp 4 Jun 1847) Here is comment from Nick "The Mallow Heritage has the Catholic parishes of Cloyne all computerized in its data base. The Cloyne Diocese represents 1/3 of all the Catholic parishes in County Cork. My hunch is that Edmund and family were from Cloyne, as opposed to West Cork or the 3rd diocese in County Cork. I don't know the source for Edmund's 5/6/1842 birth date on the tombstone. As frequently is the case, a living relative has hearsay knowledge about a birth date and they can be unreliable. However, of the Edward/Edmond/Edmund Scullys baptized within a 10 year period of the 5/6/1842 birthdate, only the 4/30/1842 baptized Edmund is actually spelled Edmund and it is closest to the 5/6/1842 date. It may be nice to add that info. in case one in the family later chooses to take more research in Ireland. My guess is that individual research (professional) in Ireland is quite expensive as the Irish economy is doing quite well and prices are steep. We may never find the actual Edmund unless we can confirm the 3 siblings also came to Galesburg area." |

According to his obituray, Hugh Humphrey was born in Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts in 1819. He died in Prairie City, McDonough, Illinois on February 2, 1890. Hugh is of unknown descent though it is presumed that he was descended from David Humphrey (1720 - 8 Mar 1801) and Mary _____ of Great Barrington, Berkshire County, Massachusetts. David and Mary had 3 known sons, Hugh (8 Dec 1749 - 25 Oct 1840) m. Desire Pixley David (1760 - ) m. Pamela Brown Robert (1760 - ) Of these, nothing is known of Robert, and David was married in New York, and is therefore unlikely his ancestor. Hugh and Desire remained in Great Barrington and had 9 children, all born in Great Barrington: Mary (4 Nov 1777 - 11 Sep 1862) m. Lancaster Comstock Levi (7 Apr 1780 - aft 1830) m. Nancy Fargo James (1 Feb 1782 - ) m. Betsy Jacobs Isaac (11 Nov 1783 - 24 Aug 1818) m. Harriet Burr David (29 May 1786 - 18 Sep 1877) m. Sophronia Hamlin Mercy (12 Aug 1788 - ) m. Ansel Ray Electa (29 Apr 1791 - ) m. John Sherman John (21 Jul 1793 - ) m. Eunice Of these, David's children are known with children born in 1818 and 1820, so he could not have been Hugh's father. Levi appears in the 1830 census with only 1 son who was less than 5 years old, so he could not be the father of Hugh either, because Hugh was 11 at the time. The other sons do not appear in the 1820 or 1830 censuses for Great Barrington. There was a Miles Humphrey, 40-50 years, in Great Barrington in 1830 who may have been the father as he had 2 sons between 9 and 14 at the time. He was not there in 1820 however, and it is unknown whom his parents were. Hugh's obituary states that he moved to Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio in 1840. He married Elizabeth Lovell there in May 30, 1843 - the date taken from their marriage certificate. Elizabeth Lovell was born March 4, 1827. She is possibly the daughter of David Lovell; again, this is unproven. The 1880 Federal Illinois Census of Prairie City, McDonough County, Illinois lists her father's and her mother's birthplace as Ohio. She appears with her husband in the 1850 United States Census for Anderson Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. The only Lovell listed in the 1840 census for the same township is David Lovell; he and his wife were between the ages of 30 and 40, so they were born in the first decade after the turn of the century. They are listed as having 5 children: 1 male under 5 which would possibly be B. Lovell, age 4; 1 male between 5 and under 10; 1 female under 5; 1 female between 5 and under 10; 2 females between 10 and under 15, possibly Sarah A. Lovell, age 10 and Elizabeth Lovell, age 13. David Lovell is also found in the 1830 United States Federal Census for Anderson, Hamilton County, Ohio living next door to his brother William and his father John. David and his wife are between 20 and 29, and they have 3 daughters under 5. Elizabeth would have been 3, and Sarah A. would have been a new born. John and his wife are between 40 and 49, and they have 1 son at home between 20 and 29, 2 between 10 and 14, and 1 between 5 and 9. They also have 1 daughter at home between 20 and 29, 1 between 15 and 19, and 1 between 10 and 14. There is also an Oliver Lovell found in the 1810 and 1817 Tax Lists for Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio. He is also found in the 1860 Federal Census Index (pg 98) for Millcreek Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. This is possibly a relative. Elizabeth Lovell died after her husband’s death as she is mentioned as a survivor in his obituary. She died June 26, 1890 in Praiirie Ciry, McDonough County, Illinois at the age of 63 years, 3 months, and 22 days. She is buried in the Prairie City Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois. Hugh and Elizabeth had 4 children: Levi (bet 16 Sep 1845 and 16 Sep 1846 - bef 1860) Susan Alwilda (1845 - Oct 1921) m. Andrew Perry Estus David Henry Humphrey (16 Mar 1856 - 21 Jan 1924) m. Phoebe Jane Compton Francis/Frances Marion ( - ae 18) Levi and Susan appear as children in the 1850 census for Anderson Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. Levi is 5 years old when the census was taken. No further record for him has been found. Sometime between January 1, 1856 and March 16, 1856, the family moved to Vermont, McDonough County, Illinois. In 1868, the family moved again, this time to Cass County, Missouri. They eventually moved back to Illinois, to McDonough County, and settled there in Prairie City in 1874, where they are found in the 1880 Federal Illinois Census. Hugh is listed as age 61 and Elizabeth as age 53. More information on the Great Barrington Humphreys can be found in “The Dorchester and Weymouth Families of Humphrey” by Gilbert Nash. I have not personally reviewed this work. |

According to "The Forsythe-Humphrey Story", written by his granddaughter, Jonathan Jesse Compton was the son of James Compton and Phoebe Lamoreux. He was born in New York, but his daughter icorrectly states that he was born in Ohio in the 1880 Federal Illinois Census for Maquon, Knox County, Illinois. A Jonathan Compton is found in the 1820 Federal Census Index for Wayne, Steuben County, New York, but this person would be a head of household, and therefore not Jonathan Jesse. Jonathan died of heart disease. Jonathan Jesse married Julia Ann Taylor on 17 April 1840 in Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York. By her own words, she claims in the 27 December, 1906 Canton Weekly Register that they were married in January 1837 in Auburn, New York. Julia would have only been 12 years old at the time. Also, their first child was not born until June 1841, so it seems unlikely that they were married as early as 1837. On the Widow’s Civil War Application, the marriage date is listed as 9 April 1840. Julia Ann Taylor was born in Cato, Cayuga County, New York. She stated in the same newspaper article, that she was born in Auburn, but this appears to be incorrect also. Her daughter was incorrect when she listed her mother as born in Indiana in the 1880 census mentioned above. Julia died in 1913 at the age of 88 years, 10 months, and 6 days. Why her tombstone says 1912 is anybody’s guess. About 7 years before she died, Julia had a stroke, and was an invalid. This may explain some of the inconsistencies in her statements. She was cared for in her home in Avon, Illinois by her half sister Colista Taylor Hamill. Jonathan and Julia had 12 children, the first 2 were born in Jamestown, New York, the next 6 in Canton, Illinois, and the rest in Avon, Illinois: Sarah Mariah (10 Jun 1841 - 1906, OK) m. 1859, Macomb, IL, Addiston Clark Lindsey William L. W. (1 May 1843 - 2 May 1856, Avon, IL) Catherine Sorell (17 Apr 1845 - 21 Jan 1929, Kewanee, IL) m. 1863, Macomb, IL, John William B. Hodson John Bennett (18 Mar 1846 - 24 Nov 1890, Springfield, IL) m. "Emma" Isabelle "Belle" Rogers Frampton Dewitt Clinton (Sep 1850 - 19 Mar 1851, Rock County, Wisconsin) twin son (1852 - 1852) twin son (1852 - 1852) Sorelda Ann (29 May 1854 - 2 Feb 1925, Galesburg, IL) m. James Randolph Cunningham Phoebe Jane Compton (3 May 1857 - 25 Oct 1938, Wilmington, IL) m. 2 Feb 1870 David Henry Humphrey Ida May (23 Jan 1859 - 14 Sep 1864) Julia Isabell (16 May 1861 - 20 Mar 1934, South Bend, IN) m. Timothy William Daniel Goodsil Minnie Emaline (1 Dec 1866 - Dec 1929, Detroit, MI) m. Oct 1888, Charles David Hamill The family moved from Jamestown, Chautauqua, New York where their first two children were born, then to Canton, Fulton County, Illinois sometime after 1 May in 1843 via canal on the Ohio, Mississippi, and Illinois rivers. Julia was incorrect when she stated 1840 in the newspaper article stated above. Jonathan is found as head of household in the 1850 Federal Census Index for Canton, Fulton County, Illinois. In 1855, the family moved by covered wagon to Avon, Fulton County, Illinois where Jonathan is again found as the head of household in the 1860 Federal Census Index for Avon, Fulton County, Illinois. Once again, Julia was incorrect when she stated in the same newspaper article that they moved to Avon in 1852. On 21 September 1861 at the age of 43, Private Jonathan Jesse Compton joined the Union Army, for an enlistment of three years, and was mustered into Company G, of the 50th Regiment of the Illinois Volunteer Infantry on 1 October, 1861 in Quincy, Illinois. He was discharged on 27 September 1864 in Rome, Georgia, but reenlisted until the end of the war. He was placed under the command of Capt. Geo. W. Brown and Col. Moses W. Bain. The regiment was assigned to the 3rd brigade 2nd division 16th corps Army of the Tennessee, later to the division Army of the Cumberland and participated in the following engagements: 6 February, 1862 Ft. Henry 13-15 February, 1862 Ft. Donnellson, Tennessee 6-7 April, 1862 Shiloh, Tennessee 30 April - 30 May, 1862 Corinth, Mississippi 5 October, 1862 Bear Creek 17 April, 1863 Cherokee and Newcomers Farm, Alabama 8 May, 1864 Snake Creek Gap, Georgia 13 May, 1864 Wesaca 15 May, 1864 Lay’s Ferry 17 May, 1864 Contanaula River, Georgia 5 October, 1864 Allatoona, Georgia 21 December, 1864 Savannah, Georgia 7 February, 1865 Campaign of the Carolinas including Columbia, South Carolina 26 February, 1865 Lynch's Creek, South Carolina 13 March, 1865 Fayetteville, North Carolina 19-21 March, 1865 Bentonsville The 50th was reviewed by General Sheridan at Raleigh, North Carolina and was present at the surrender of Gen. Johnston at Bennett House on 26 April 1865. They also took part in the Grand Review at Washington, D.C. on 24 May 1865. The "History of Fulton County, Illinois" says this about The 50th Infantry: "organized in the month of August, 1861, by Col. Moses M. Bane. The 50th was engaged at Shiloh, April 6th and 7th; engaged in the siege of Corinth, May, 1862. June 4 it pursued the enemy as far as Booneville, Miss., returning to Corinth June 10. The regiment was engaged in a number of battles and skirmishes, during their service. About three-fourths of the regiment re-enlisted as veterans and were mustered Jan. 16, '64, when they left for Illinois for veteran furlough. The 50th was one of the best drilled regiments in the service. In the prize drill July 3, 1865, with the 63d Illinois, 7th Iowa and 50th Illinois competing; the latter won the prize banner. They were mustered out of service July 13, 1865." While Jonathan was off to war, Julia purchased a lot in the town of Avon, Fulton County, Illinois in 1863 for $90.00 Lot 3 block 11 (file number 38320, filed 4 May 1863 in book 57, page 219). In the 1870 Federal Illinois Census for Union Township, Fulton County, Jonathan and family are listed; Jonathan at age 53 as a carpenter, and Julia at age 45 as a tailoress. In the 1870 Federal Illinois Census for Avon, Fulton County, Jonathan and family are again listed; Jonathan at age 63 as a baker, and Julia at age 55 as keeping house. On Jonathan’s death certificate (number 392), he is also listed as a baker. Apparently, he ran a hotel in Avon, Fulton County, Illinois called the "Soldier's Home" until his death. It is interesting to note that Catherine Sorell had children with middle names of three of her ancestors maiden names, namely: Leonard Jelliffe Hodson, Alma Prindle Hodson, and Ethel Lamoureaux Hodson. |

Johann Broscheid is of non-certain descent. On January 30, 1851 in Neunkirchen, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany, he married Anna Catharina Cornet, also of unknown descent. They had one known daughter: Maria Catharina Broscheid (21 Dec 1855 - 12 Mar 1941) m. Franz Joseph Loebach. They may have had a second child, Peter Broscheid (abt 1855 - ). This Peter arrived on board the "Zeeland" from Belgium in the United States on October 4, 1904 (manifest #25) at the age of 49. On board the same ship, 2 seats away, was a Franz Jos[eph] Lobach (manifest #23) at the age of 48 - probably the husband of his presumed sister Maria Catharina Broscheid. Johann Broscheid is perhaps the son of Johann Broscheid and Anna Marie Peters. Joseph Schneider, a researcher from Much, Germany, has suggested this because: 1. he is of the correct age span to be their son, born about 1826. 2. his presumed aunt, Anna Marie Broscheid, immigrated to Leonore, LaSalle County, Illinois in 1855. 3. his presumed father, Johann Broscheid, immigrated to Leonore, LaSalle County, Illinois between 1856 and 1870, possibly in 1868. 4. his presumed nephew, Peter Wilhelm Broscheid, immigrated to Leonore, LaSalle County, Illinois, before 1883. 5. his daughter Maria Catharina Broscheid immigrated to Livingston County, Illinois (which borders LaSalle County, Illinois) in 1881 or 1882, around the age of 25 years, and she certainly would not have come alone. 6. his daughter Maria Catharina Broscheid's marriage license has listed as a witness M. Broscheid. This is possibly her presumed cousin, Maria Katharina Broschied (of the same name), the sister of Peter Wilhelm Broscheid. 7. his daughter Maria Catharina Broscheid had 1 or more children born in Dwight, Livingston County, Illinois between 1884 and 1895, and his presumed aunt, Anna Marie Broscheid, had a grandaughter born their in 1877. This implication here is obvious - members of the same family seem to have immigrated to adjoing counties in Illinois, though different generations seem to have come at different times. Possibly Peter Wilhelm and both Maria Katherine's came together in 1881 or 1882. It is also possible that Johann is the son of one of his presumed father's 4 known brothers, but is less likely, because their relationships to the immigrants is more distantly connected. There was also a William Broscheid (b. 16 Mar 1835, Neunkirchen, Germany - d. 27 Dec 1905, Leonore, LaSalle County, Illinois) who married Ann Hoff, and had 3 known sons: Theodore, and John (1862-1938) m. Christina Eirich and had 3 known sons, John W, Joseph and Peter. It is unknown how this family ties in. |
