According to the Laura Stevenson, a grandchild of Alpha and Lucinda, and to Grace Worrell, a great-grandchild, Alpha L. Forsyth was the son of Oliver Franklin Forsyth and according to the estate records of Margaret Layson, Alpha was one of her heirs. The “Marriages of Adams County, Illinois Vol. I: 1825 - 1860” lists Alpha marrying Lucinda Ann Witt on 28 January 1844. The “Illinois Statewide Marriage Index” also lists this date, but states “maybe” 14 March 1844. Since their marriage license was not dated until 9 March 1844, in Adams County, Illinois, the earlier date must be incorrect. It is assumed the latter date is correct as it occurs 5 days after their marriage license was issued. Alpha married secondly to Porcillie "Cill" Carrier, in Hancock County, Illinois on 19 August 1886. No children were born to this union. According to the Laura Stevenson, Lucinda Ann Witt was the daughter of Daniel Witt and Martha Brewer. She was born in Virginia in 1820, and died sometime before the 1880 census when Alpha is listed as a widower, and was living with 2 laborers, a housekeeper, and the housekeeper’s son. Lucinda was probably buried in the family cemetery on their farm as Laura Stevenson suggests, however no headstones have been found for Alpha or Lucinda. Laura Stevenson claimed that she had seen Alpha's stone, got and lost the dates from it. The stone of his grandson Alpha has been found there, so she may have confused the two names. The current state of the cemetery is overgrown with day lilies. As far as I am aware, no one have ever cleared the ground and done an exhaustive search for stones. Alpha and Lucinda had 4 children: William Henry Forsyth (28 Nov 1845 - 11 May 1871) m. Martha Lurinda McFarland Nancy Elizabeth Forsyth (1848 - 1940) m. James Wilson Worrell Alpha Joel Forsyth (Jun 1850 - Bef 9 Apr 1891) m. Alice Mary Ann (1853 - Aft 1891) m1. 30 Mar 1873, Hancock County, IL, Alfred Landstrum; m2. ‘Shorty’ Harper The 1850 Federal, Adams County, Illinois Census, for Houston Township, lists Alpha, age 31, as a farmer with 1500 acres, Lucinda age 28, William H, age 5, Nancy E age 2, and Alpha 1/2 year old. The same census in 1860 lists Alpha as age 39, a farmer with 800 acres valued at $16,000, Lucinda age 38, William age 15 1/2, Elizabeth age 12, Joel age 10, and Mary age 7. Their slave Ester Halo, age 28, farmer, born in Alabama, is also listed. Hester, was left to Alpha in his father's will, and came with the family from Kentucky in 1834, when the Alpha, his mother, grandmother, and siblings came to Illinois. Hester would have only been 12 years old. She does not show up in the 1840 or 1850 censuses. She is also said to have stayed with the family after the Civil War, and was buried in the family cemetery. No headstone for her has been found, but Grace Worrell claimed to have seen her stone. Some of the other relatives that came to Illinois with Alpha and his family are: David and Sarah (Layson) Pond, Stephen and Nancy (Layson) Owens, and Mildred Layson. The Ponds and Owens lived in Monroe City, Missouri for a time. The Owens were said to be in Illinois by 1830. Since most of Alpha's farm land appears to have been originally owned by their wealthy Uncle Robert Layson, the families may have emigrated separately to occupy portions of his land. The same Robert Layson died in September, 1848. In 1852, John Martin Layson representing the Layson family filed suit against Alpha and his siblings to take the land upon which they lived, claiming it was theirs by right. Alpha filed a countersuit to keep the lands upon which they lived, as they had made improvements to the land. In the final decree, they were able to do so, and the lands were divided equally among Robert Layson’s nephews and nieces or their heirs. Alpha's son, Alpha Joel is also supposed to be buried in the family cemetery. Laura Stevenson said that Joel was married and died young, the same year as her parent’s marriage (1871), but she had mixed him up with his brother William. No other record of Alpha Jr. has been found, so presumably he did die young. We know he did not survive his father. 'Joel' was supposed to have married Alice, and had a daughter Lulu who died as a small child and is supposed to be buried in the Forsyth Cemetery also. No stone for her has been found, nor for her father. At Margaret (Layson) Forsyth's estate sale on 11 February, 1841, Alpha Forsyth purchased 2 cows along with their calves, 2 mares, a lot of hogs, a chopping axe, gears, a hoe, stretchers, a harness, several lots of corn, a bed, some barrels, and a harrow. He is then listed as an heir of Margaret (Layson) Forsyth on 10 December 1841, when he approved the account of Dr. Calvin Brown. Later on 8 November 1850, he is listed as one of the heirs of Robert Layson, brother of Margaret (Layson) Forsyth. Alpha is found on the 1872 plat map of Houston Township, Adams County, and on 27 August 1881 his is listed as the guardian of his grandson Alpha when the boy turned 14. This grandson Alpha is the one whose headstone was found in the Forsyth Cemetery. Edna (Forsyth) Hyslop, great-great granddaughter, claimed that Alpha Layson Forsyth’s middle name was Lyman, but his grandson was named Alpha Layson. His grandparents, John Layson and Margaret Martin, had a son and grandson named John Martin. The family therefore had a history of using the mother's maiden name as the middle name for at least on of their children. It seems reasonable that Alpha's mother's maiden name could have been his middle name. His great-great granddaughter-in-law, Minnie Elizabeth Forsythe in her book “The Forsythe-Humphrey Story” called him the first William Henry Forsyth, but she was mistaken. Her later correspondence with Laura Stevenson cleared up this naming mistake. Alpha is said to have been born in Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky on 9 April, 1818. The descendants of his sister, Eliza, state that she was born on 5 June, 1819, which is a reasonable separation between children. Their parents, however, are known to have not been married until 31 December, 1818. Since, it is unlikely that their parents would have had children out of wedlock; it must be assumed that Alpha's and/or Eliza's birthdates are in error, but if so, what dates are likely? The November 1840 Illinois Federal Census indicates that both Alpha and Eliza were born before November 1820. The 23 November 1850 Illinois Federal Census for Houston Township, Adams County indicates that Alpha was born between 23 November 1818 and 22 November 1819, and that Eliza was 1 year older. The 1860 Federal Illinois Census for Houston Township, Adams County indicates that Alpha was born between 1820 and 1821; however it also lists him as only 1 year older than his wife, where the 1850 census listed him as 3 years older. The 1880 Census for Chili, Hancock County, Illinois, lists him as age 60 indicating he was born in 1819 or 1820. If we correct his range of birthdates for the 1860 census, we find him born between 1818 and 1819. And lastly, his 3 obituaries all indicate that he was born between 4 September 1818 and 3 September 1819. Considering all these sources, we find he must have been born between 23 November 1818 and 3 September 1819, and that he is younger than his sister Eliza. His parents, obviously, did not have 2 children in the eight months following their marriage, unless of course they were twins. Coincidently, Laura Stevenson states in her letters, that Alpha was a twin, so it is likely that they were both born on 5 June 1819. Alpha was "a rich farmer, had extensive holdings". He owned farm land in both Hancock County, and Adams County, much of which was inherited from his mother, and his uncle Robert Layson. The farm was located 5 miles southwest of Bowen, Illinois. In 1978 the remaining portion was owned by Wilson Olaf Worrell, a descendant of Alpha and Lucinda's daughter Nancy. In 1999, the farm was said to still be in the hands of a Forsyth descendant, referred to as an "old guy", possibly the same gentleman; the rest having been sold off by descendants. The original homestead, which stood in Hancock County, had a large 2 story brick house, with a large basement having separate bins for apples, potatoes, corn, etc. Alpha used to hide his money in these bins. The house was constructed using wooden joints instead of nails. Inside the home was a beautiful stairway, a large master bedroom and fireplace. The master bedroom contained a high bed in which Alpha passed away. In back was a large covered porch, leading to a 2 story work shop, and a brick meat house. There was also a large covered porch in front. He apparently had a granary, and an orchard. After Alpha passed away, his daughter Nancy and her family lived there. The house no longer stands. Nearby was the family cemetery, surrounded by a fence and pillars. Near to the cemetery stood a county school which Alpha allowed to be constructed on his farm. The school taught through 8th grade. Joel Darrah Worrell, Alpha's grandson taught school there, and Joel's sister Laura (Worrell) Stevenson sometimes substituted there for him. The school was eventually closed in 1924, and also no longer stands. Apparently the impression of its foundation is still visible from the cemetery. When Alpha died, he divided his lands between his surviving two daughters. Nancy inherited 160 acres of the Hancock County farm, and 110 acres of the Adams County lands. She also inherited $1,800. He also left a small piece of land to Dick and Mary Ellen Clark for a home. Apparently Alpha’s daughter-in-law, Martha McFarland, also inherited some of the land, as she owned 10 acres there in 1910. When Martha's husband died in 1871, he had 80 acres in the area, which was divided amongst his 3 sons when they came of age. Alpha died on 4 September, 1891, in Chili Township, Hancock County, Illinois. “When he was on his death bed, and his doctor informed him of his condition, he remonstrated with the doctor, and told him that he didn't have time to die as he had to finish harvesting the crops." He was buried on 6 September, 1891, in the Forsyth Cemetery, on his farm in Hancock County, Illinois. |

William Madison McFarland was the son of John Arthur McFarland and Rebecca McFarland according to Thomas Simms McFarland, a contemporary, and is also stated in “The History of Adams County, Illinois”. He was born on August 12, 1814 near Xenia, Greene County, Ohio. He died on September 11, 1896 at the age of 82 years and 29 days, in LaPrairie, Adams County, Illinois. He is buried in Hebron Cemetery, Adams, County, Illinois. He married Eliza McFarland November 20, 1838. Eliza McFarland, according to Thomas Simms McFarland, was the daughter of Arthur McFarland, and was born on February 3, 1814 in Greene County, Ohio, and died December 6, 1882 in Adams County, Illinois at the age of 69. She is buried alongside her husband. Madison and Eliza had 4 children all born in Adams County, Illinois: Rebecca Jane (28 Aug 1840 - 29 Jun 1886) m. Lewis L. Strickler George Green (15 Jul 1842 - 2 Mar 1852) Martha Lurinda (10 Jan 1846 - 20 Mar 1920) m. William Henry Forsyth Amy Hatch (12 Sep 1848 - 18 Feb 1917) m. John W. Suter When Madison was 4 years old, his family moved from Tennessee to Harrison County, Kentucky, and then to Greene County, Ohio. In August of 1832, Madison came to Camp Point, Adams County, Illinois and moved there permanently in 1837. A William McFarland is listed in the Illinois Public Domain Land Tract Sales as purchasing 5 plots of land in Hancock County on 5 Feb, 1839, totaling 240 acres. This may be a different William, as the 1860 census lists a separate William in the Pontoosuc Township of that county (ID# IL373154068). William and Eliza are both listed as age 36 in the 1850 Federal Illinois Censuses in Houston Township, Adams County. William is also listed in the 1860 Federal Illinois Census in Houston Township, Adams County as head of household (ID# IL373154074) on page 981. William is shown in the 1872 Plat Book, for Houston Township in Adams County, Illinois. |

Mary Reily, born in Ireland, is listed as Mary Godsell in the 1880 Federal Illinois Census for Knox County, where she is a widow, and 64 years old. This places her born about 1816. A search of the parish where her children were born gives us two possible baptism records for her. She was either baptized on March 1, 1815 to parents Daniel Reily and Margaret Hogan, siblings: James and Margaret. Or she was baptized on March 17, 1819 with parents John Reily and Ellen Gorman, siblings: John, Michael, James, Johanna, Thomas, and Coleman. We know that she has a brother James from her marriage record, but both of these accounts support this, so this is of little help. We also know that she had children named Michael and Margaret, who could have been named after siblings, but since each record supports one of these names, this is of little help also. It should be noted here that it is likely that the first family would have more children, but she was born third. We know that a Johanna Reilly witnessed the baptism of her son Patrick. If this were her sister, this would support the second record, however for this to be true, Johanna, an older sister, would have to have been unmarried, when Mary, her younger sister, had her 5th child, which seems unlikely, so she is probably a sister-in-law, perhaps the wife of Patrick Reilly who witnessed the birth of her first son, Michael. This Patrick Reily, not listed among the siblings, may be an additional child from the first family. We also know that she had two daughters named Ellen (the first died young). This also supports having a mother named Ellen. In the end, there does not seem to be enough evidence to choose one family over the other. She died in Galesburg, Knox County, Illinois. |

William Patrick Godsil married Mary Reily on February 9, 1840 in Aghada Parish, Cloyne Diocese, county Cork, Ireland; witnesses were James Reily and Mary Curtin. John Hickey There first child was born out of wedlock. He was baptised 7 months after they were married. Patirck Henry Godsil's obituary states that the "family" came over in 1864. As such I would expect that means at a minimum, the parents and himself, and probably all children younger than himself, including Margaret. The children older than himself were Michael and Maurice. Michael arrived in New York from Ireland on the 'Virginia', on May 16, 1865. Maurice 'Godsell', seems to have come over with Edmund Scully on the same ship the following year, on May 22, 1866. Maurice's age is listed as 20 which would be correct, and he supposedly died about that time, and was buried at sea. I could find no record of him in the U.S. Ellen (Godsil) Hickey's obituary states that she along with her parents immigrated about 1873 ("about 33 years ago"), and that she was born in County Cork, Ireland. This obituary also lists as living in Galesburg, her sister Margaret Scully, and brothers Patrick and Michael. |

Bennet Taylor was most probably the son of Robert Wiley Taylor and Rhoda Bennett. He was born between April 2, 1794 in Vermont, possibly Wolcott. Wolcott is in what is now Lamoille County. Lamoille County was created in 1835 from Chittenden, Orleans, and Franklin Counties. In the 1850 Federal Illinois Census for District 22 in Christian County, Illinois, Bennet listed his place of birth as Vermont. In the 1880 Federal Illinois census for Avon, Fulton County, his daughter Julian Ann stated that he was born in Connecticut. He died in Stonington, Christian County, Illinois on March 11, 1853 and is buried there at the Stonington Cemetery. He first married in Westport, Fairfield, County, Connecticut, in 1813, Rachel Jelliffe, the daughter of William Jelliff and Huldah Sturges. Bennet's first name has been spelled variously Bennet and Bennett. Rachel was born on 4 January, 1793, in Norwalk or Westport Connecticut. She died on 11 March, 1830, in Troupsville, Cayuga County, New York. Rachel's last name has been spelled variously Jelliff and Jelliffe. They had 10 children, the first 5 of which were born in New York, the rest in Christian County, Illinois: Charles Henry (15 Mar 1833 - 31 Dec 1859) m1. 31 Dec 1839, Nancy Jane Brown m2. Hamill Clinton DeWitt (7 Feb 1846 - 11 Jan 1932) John B. (26 May 1848 - ) Martha J. (28 Jun 1850 - ) The birth and death dates for Bennet, Rachel, Nancy and their children are from the Bennet's Family Bible. Bennet was a hatter - made plug and stovepipe silk hats for men. Sometime between 1822 and 7 July, 1824, Bennett moved his family to Ira, Cayuga County, New York, where Bennet became a farmer. Robert William Taylor's obituary stated he was 7, but this could not be since Julia and Julius were born in New York when Robert was only 5. Bennet and Rachel sold some of their land in Norwalk, Fairfiled County, Connecticut on October 5, 1824 to Dan Taylor (They were already living in New York). The land was originally owned by his grandfather then left for his grandmother's use when his grandfather passed away. His inherited share was from his father, Robert W. Taylor. The document was signed in the presence of Charles W. Taylor and Seth Taylor. The JP who signed it was also Seth Taylor (LDS film #5012 - Vol. 24, Pg. 732 - Norwalk Deeds). They also sold land there to Gould Jelliff on 28 October, 1824. The document was signed in the presence of Hiram Taylor and Alonzo Taylor (LDS film #5012 - Vol. 24, Pg. 576, Norwalk Deeds). Charles W., Hiram, and Alonzo were Bennet Taylor's brothers. Dan Taylor was his uncle. It is unknown who Seth Tayor was. Gould Jelliff was most likely Rachel's brother, although she had a cousin by that name from her brother Aaron. I have been told by two distinct individuals that they had seen proof that Bennet Taylor was the son of Robert Wiley Taylor and Rhoda Bennet, however in each case they no longer had the documentation supporting these claims. Sometime after September 1841 and before January 17, 1844, Bennet moved his family again to Christian County, Illinois. |

(perhaps) Johann Broscheid (abt 1826 - ) m. 30 Jan 1851, Neunkirchen, Anna Catharina Cornet It is not clear when Johann the father emigrated. His eldest daughter emigrated in 1855, but his wife did not die until 1856 in Germany. It is unknown if his second child, Perter Broscheid emigrated, but Peter's son Peter Wilhelm certainly did prior to 1883. There is a Johann Broscheid, age 60, farmer, who immigrated to the port of New York on April 20, 1868 from the port of Bremen Germany aboard the SS Weser (manifest #547). His point of origin is listed as Niederwennerscheid, Germany. He appears to have been travelling alone, and is the only person on board listed from that village. Johann the father would have been age 70, so it does not seem possible that he is the Johann Broscheid aboard the SS Weser. |

Mathias Dahm was the son of Nicolas Dahm. According to the 1860 Federal Census for Niles Township, Cook County, Illinois, dated June 30, 1860, he was listed as 48 years old. The 1870 census for the same township, taken August 30, 1870, lists him as 58 years old. The 1880 census for the same township, taken June 9, 1880, lists him as 68 years old. Therefore he must have been born between August 30, 1811 and June 8, 1812 in Prussia. He died in 1902 in Niles Center, Cook County, Illinois. He married Barbara Weinand who is of unknown descent. She, according to the same census records was listed as ages 50, 61, and deceased, respectively. Therefore she must have been born between June 30, 1808 and August 29, 1809 in Prussia, and she must have died between August 30, 1870 and June 9, 1880 in Niles Center, Cook County, Illinois. Mathias and Barbara had several children, all of which were born in Prussia except the last one who was born in Illinois: Nicolas (bet Jun 30 1836 and Jun 29 1837 - 1862) Barbara (abt 1838 - ) Caroline (abt 1838 - ) Johannis (Nov 1839 - 13 Sep 1918) m. Catharina Gertrude Wagner Angela Apollonia (Apr 1842 - 1917) m. Mathias Fiegen Peter B. (1 Jan 1850 - 23 Dec 1930) m. Gertrude Wilhelmina Fortmann Anna Maria/ Maria Clara "Mary" (abt 1855 - 1917) m. Eberhardt Blanmeyer The family emigrated from Germany and came to America arriving in New York on August 4, 1851 aboard the Reliance with Mathias' father. Mathias is listed as Matthew on the passenger list. The last port of departure was Antwerp, Belgium. Comparing the ages listed on the passenger list to those derived from census records, Mathias' age is listed 1 year too young, and Barbara's age is listed as 2 or 3 years too young. The oldest son, Nicholas, is listed as 1 year too old, Johannis and Angela are both listed as 4 years too young, and Peter is listed 1 year too young. It is almost certain that the passenger list applies to this family, so it is unclear how the ages listed were derived at the time of entry. Since Peter is listed as only 6 months old, this would put the list dated at August 1850 which is 1 year before arriving in New York. |

Johannis Wagner is the son of Peter Wagener and Margarethae Gaveler. He was born on February 15, 1805 in Fliessem, Kreis Bitburg, Germany and baptized the next day at the Heiligkreuz Katholisch. He was confirmed into the Catholic faith on May 31, 1825, also at the Heiligkreuz Katholisch. He married Elizabeth Jane Heinz, the daughter of Henrich Heintz and Catharina Weiler on February 15, 1832 in Fliessem. Elizabeth was born June 24, 1804 in Matzen, Kreis Bitburg, Germany. It is assumed Elizabeth's middle name is Jane because she is listed as Jane in one of the census records. They had seven children, all born in Germany: Peter (15 Jan 1832 - 22 Sep 1925) m. Mary Baltes Frederick Henry "Henry" (abt 8 Aug 1834 - ) m. Lena Wiesen Gertrude (1 Nov 1836 - 16 Apr 1899) m. John Belting Maragretha "Margaret" (20 Sep 1838 - 26 Sep 1906) m. Marriage: (9 SEP 1837) St. Thomas in Liverpool, Lancashire, England |
|
John Davies (born John Jones) was the son of Edward Jones and Elizabeth Davies. He was born on May 25, 1815, in Shrewsbury, Shropshire county, England. He was baptized there at St. Mary's on June 11, 1815. When he was very young he taken in by the House of Industry, an orphanage, and raised until he was about 8 years old when he went to live with William Davies as an apprectice, as what I do not know. It is unclear what happended to his parents. Harold Davies states in "A History of my Relatives" they they had died, but others claim that Edward did not die at that time; probably Elizabeth did. William Davies may have been a relative of Elizabeth, as John called him 'uncle'. On September 9, 1837, John Davies married Ellen Price at St. Thomas in Liverpool, Lancashire county, England. Ellen is the daughter of Richard Price and Margaret Roberts. She was born in Eastham, Cheshire county, England, and baptized there on August 6, 1819. Eastham is just across the Mersey River from the city of Liverpool. The baptism date can be found in a copy of the original baptism certificate, taken from the 'Bishop's Transcripts of the Church of England for the Parish of Eastham'. The certificate is available at the Family History Library (Microfilm # 1655668, item 1). Some records set the date at August 15, 1819, but this is incorrect. On 29 April, 1844, John and Ellen were living in Liverpool, Lancashire county, England where they joined the Church of Latter Day Saints. According to their son Reuben, "They left Liverpool June 2, 1869, and arrived in Salt Lake City June 26, 1869 with the first emigrant train to Utah by rail." When they came to America with their living children and their families, they settled in Lake Point, Tooele County, Utah. On September 21, 1874 John and Ellen received their endowments in the Endowment House in Salt Lake City, Utah. John died on September 28, 1893 at Lake Point, and was buried at the Tooele Cemetary, in Tooele, Tooele County, Utah on October 1, 1893. Ellen died the following year on December 31, 1894 in Holladay, Salt Lake County, Utah and is buried in Tooele, presumedly alongside her husband. John and Ellen had 10 children, all born in Liverpool, England.: Edward (17 Sep 1841 - 13 May 1886) m. Mary Ann Leasor Margaret Ellen (14 Mar 1843 - 15 Oct 1908) m. Charles Rambin is of unknown descent. He was born on March 2, 1806. According to the death certificate of his daughter Susan, and filled out by his grandaughter Mary Belle, he was born in France. He died on January 29, 1898 and is buried in the Old Gravel Point Cemetery, in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana. Marie Celemine Laffitte is the daughter of Joseph Marie Cesaire Lafitte and Elizabeth Latham. She was born on May 9, 1815 in Bayou St. Patrick, Texas and died on February 26, 1874 or 1884. She is buried in the Old Gravel Point Cemetery, in DeSoto Parish, Louisiana, possibly alonside her husband. She went by Celemine, Mandy or Manny Salome. She was always very proud of the fact that she was one of the first settlers in Texas. Charles and Celemine were married on September 29, 1832 in the Natchitoches Church, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Some say September 19, 1831. Charles and Celemine had 9 children: Joseph Valsey (1835 - bef Jul 1866) m. Mattie J. Fortson Ursin (1839 - bef 1850) Andre (abt 1841 - bef 1850.) Pierre (abt 1846 - bet 1860 and 1870) Margaret (1847 - ) Isaac (E_____) (abt 1849 - 9 Nov 1887) m1. 18 Oct 1869, Mary Ann Domingues; m2. 23 May 1873, Emily Poisseau Basile (abt 1851/1852 - aft 1880) m. 23 Dec 1873, Margaret _____ Peter (1853 or 1858 - bef 11 Jul 1874) Mary Therese "Susan" (15 Jan 1855 - 15 Apr 1936) Elizabeth (15 Jan 1855 - ) m. aft 17 Feb 1874, Joseph Robert Rambin Charles Rambin could not have been the youngest son of Michel Andre Antoine Rambin and Marie Therese Ignace Maillioux as the DeSoto Parish History presumes as that couple had 10 children between 1793 and 1815+, and one of their sons was born November 11, 1805. Charles could not have been born 4 months after that son, nor could he have been their youngest. The family of Michel Andre Antoine Rambin is well documented in the records of Natchitoches, Louisiana, and are covered in detail at: http://home.inu.net/sadie/michelarambin.htm. The DeSoto Parish History states that Charles was one of the oldest settlers in DeSoto Parish in and around Gloster. It also lists his date of birth and death. Charles lived his entire life in Gloster, a little community near Frierson. He had built a large home near Gloster that was still standing on a hillside in 1940. He also was involved in building the Catholic Church at Gravel Point which burned in 1900. The Old Gravel Point Cemetery, where Charles is buried is located east of Frierson. These instructions come from Tom Clark, a descendant: "If you come in on 175 from Mansfield, as soon as you cross the railroad tracks, you go around a big curve in the road. There will be a log cabin (new) on the right. You take a right here, and cross the railroad tracks again. Take a right on Friendship road just over the tracks. The Cemetery will be about 7 or 8 miles down a red clay road on the left." Sometime before July 1866, Joseph Valsey and his wife Mattie J Fortson had both died. Charles Rambin filed for tutorship of their son Charles Rambin, born 1859. In the 1870 census, the younger Charles Rambin is listed as living with his grandfather and grandmother. In the 1880 census he is listed living with his grandfather and step grandmother, therefore Mandy must have died prior to 1880, because Charles Rambin senior had remarried. Sometime prior to July 11, 1874, when he filed for tutorship of his daughter Elizabeth, a minor, he did not also file for his son Peter, so Peter either had died, or was an adult. He also did not file for his daughter Susan, therefore she must have been married prior. His wife is not listed as part of the tutorship, indicating that she had died. On August 20, 1874, Charles Rambin married the widow of Caesar Lafitte, Amanda Prudhomme. They had 2 children: Charley Poland (bef 1880 - ) Mary Hattie (Oct 1880 - ) Amanda had three children from the previous marriage, Eugenia, Eliza, and Louisa. On February 18, 1888 he filed for tutorship of the minor children of his son Isaac. Isaac and his wife Mary had died on November 9, 1887. After her second husband died, she petitioned the court as heir in law of Charles Rambin. Also named were Charles (a grandson probably) Peter (son of Charles and Celemine), Amanda (granddaughter), Florine or Corine, Evaline, Lilla, and Julian. Grandchildren Lizzie (Charles and Celemine's) Bazile (Charles and Celemine's), Susan Williams (Charles and Celemine's), Mary Hattie (a minor) and Charley Poland. It can be determined by this succession on record that no other children or grandchildren Were living at the time of Charles death. The 1900 census ward 6 precinct, June 1900 indicated Amanda Prudhomme Lafitte Rambin was living with Paul Rambin, single, born Jan 1874. Also living there was Hattie (19 years and single) and Mandy (granddaughter, born February 1886 age 14 and single). The census said Amanda had 8 children and 3 were living. |

John Benjamine Pavey was the son of Samuel Pavey and Sarah Bobbit. He was born in Kentucky on October 25, 1813. He choked while eating and died in Avoyelles Parish, in Hamburg, Louisiana on March 25, 1882. Maria Gibbs is of unknown descent; her parents, however, came from England. She was born on April 12 or 13, 1816. She was from Kentucky. She died on November 11, 1865 at the age of 49 years and 7 months. She died in Avoyelles Parish, in Hamburg, Louisiana. John and Maria were both originally buried on an old Indian mound called Coco Field, but their remains were later moved to the Baptist Cemetery in Bordelonville, Louisiana. John and Maria were married on September 11, 1834, or possibly November 11, 1834 or September 8, 1834 in Indiana. They had 8 children. Apparently the 1860 Federal Census for Avoyelles Parish (P O Marksville, Roll 407, Book 1, Page 362, dated August 6, 1860) lists the first 7 children: Samuel (13 Apr 1836 - 1906) m1. Mary Perkins; m2. Susan G. Gibbs John Jefferson (26 Jan 1838 - 27 Dec 1911) m. Sarah Augusta Whaley Francis Marion (23 Feb 1840 - 26 Jun 1909) m1. Henriette Octavie Couvillion; m2. Blanche E. Barthelemy Trescence Baudin Leonora Ann (16 Aug 1852 - 31 Jan 1933) m. Fulgence Couvillion Octavie (1853 - bef 6 Aug 1860) John was a riverboat captain operating on both the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. After their marriage, John and Maria moved down the Ohio river to Switzerland County, Indiana where the first five of their children were born. In 1840 his was living in Cotton Township near his father. Sometime between 1844 and 1848, the moved to Warsaw, Hancock County, Illinois where two more children were born. They purchased federal lands there on October 21, 1850. Then in late 1852 or early 1853, they moved down the Mississippi River, up the Atchalyafa River, settling in the hamlet of Hamburg, located in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, where their last child was born. |

Zelien Couvillion was born on December 23, 1819 in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana ["St. Paul the Apostle Church Baptism Books", Mrs. Alberta Rousseau DeCote', 1980,1994, Baptism Book #2, Baptisms 1807-1824, Page 23]. According to "To Avoyelles with the Couvillons" by Ira S. Couvillon, he was the son of Amable Couvillon II and Armaline Julie Mayeux (Mayheur) and was born on May 5, 1809. This is not possible because census records clearly show he was born around 1818/1819. He was actually the son of Adrien Couvillon and Celeste Mayeux. According to his baptism records, his godparents were Zelien Mayeux (his uncle age 17) & Emelie Mayeux (most likely his aunt Julie age 20). He is also listed as living next door to Gilbert Couvillon and the widow Celeste Couvillon in the 1850 census for Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. This would be his brother and mother. Zelien died in 1865 and is buried in the St. Hyacinthe Cemetery in Moreauville in the Diocese of Natchitoches, Louisiana. The cemetery was later relocated in the early 1890's. It is unknown if his remains were moved. Doralise Sarah Bordelon, was the daughter of Auguste Bordelon and Eulalie Guillot. According to Ira Couvillon, she was born on January 10, 1827 also in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. However a baptism record for St Paul the Apostle Church in Mansura, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, show she was born on August 2, 1826 and was baptized on October 14, 1827. She died in 1875 in Bordelonville, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. Zelien and Doralise were married on July 16, 1841 at St. Paul the Apostle Church in Mansura, Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana, Sosthene Couvillon was the only witness shown. They had 5 children, 3 of which married Pavey siblings: Fulgence (8 Dec 1842 - 4 Nov 1901) m. Leonora Ann Pavey Flavie (bef 1850 - bef 1860) Celeste Virginie (1847/11 Aug 1857 - bef 1850/1860) Olympe (12 Sep 1849 - 23 Aug 1869) m. Mary Hulda Pavey Henriette Octavie (24 Sep 1853 - 2 Oct 1904) m. Francis Marion Pavey After they married, he and Doralise moved to Bayou Des Glaises (now Bordelonville) where all their children were born. |
