Oliver Franklin Forsyth was the son of Isaac Forsyth and Francis Brown. He was born about 1796 in either Hanover, York County, Pennsylvania or in Baltimore, Baltimore County, Maryland. In the 1880 Federal Illinois Census for Chili Township in Hancock County, his son, Alpha, lists that his father was born in Maryland. He probably died in Kentucky, before 1834, when his family emigrated to Adams County, Illinois. Mrs' Fitting's research found no orphans of Oliver filed in Bourbon Co, Kentucky, which probably means the family moved to Adams County, Illinois, shortly after his death. He is listed in the 1830 Federal Kentucky Census for Bourbon County, and was certainly dead by April 1, 1838 when his wife issued a IOU to Isaac Adair. The descendants of Denmark Forsyth state that Oliver is buried in St. Louis, Missouri. He married Margaret Layson, daughter of John Layson and Margaret Martin, in Bourbon County, Kentucky on 31 December, 1818. Their bond, dated 20 December, 1818 lists her as Rebecca, but this is undoubtedly a nickname. In an article entitled 'Earlly Bourbon Families: Layson Family' published in the Kentuckian Citizen Newspaper, date unknown, Margaret Layson was said to have married Denmark Forsythe (Oliver's brother), This is an obvious error as Denmark's family is well documented. Margaret was born in Kentucky, as stated in the same census. She was probably born about 1794 as she is listed as between 16 and 26 in the 1810 Federal Census for Bourbon County, Kentucky, and 1794 would have therefore been the latest date applicable. She died between 6 July 1840 and 5 Sep 1840 in Adams County, Illinois. These dates were based on her estate papers. Oliver and Margaret had 6 children: Alpha Layson (5 Jun 1819 - 4 Sep 1891) m. Lucinda Ann Witt Eliza (5 Jun 1819 - 18 Mar 1906) m. 17 Mar 1842, Hancock County, IL, Daniel Coleman Mustain Susan A. (1825/28 - 1852) m. 20 Mar 1851, Adams County, IL, Zachariah Woods Mary Jane (1830 - 20 Apr 1904) m. 3 Jan 1850, Adams County, IL, Archibald Owens Franklin (1832/35 - aft 1840, bef 1850) Margaret ( - abt Aug,1839, bef 1840) Some of the chldren appear in the November 1840 Federal Illinois Census, for Adams or Hancock Counties. Alpha is listed as the head of household with 1 male aged 20-30 which must be himself, 1 female aged 20-30, which must be Eliza, 1 female 10-15, which must be Susan A., 1 female 5-10 which must be Mary Jane who would have been 10, and 1 male 5-10, which must have been Franklin. Franklin and Margaret were thought to have both died in about August 1839, when their mother had ordered and bought coffins for a son and daughter. Yet, Franklin appears over a year later in the 1840 census, but is not heard from again. My grandmother, and her sister-in-law, both list Oliver's middle name as Franklin. Laura Stevenson listed his son as Alpha Franklin Forsyth, on one occasion, but on others as Alpha L. Forsyth. She also listed Oliver as having no middle name. Her letters are known to be quite confusing, and often mixed up. In the land records for Paris, Bourbon County, Kentucky, On 6 July, 1829, Oliver D. Forsythe and his wife Margaret sold 50 acres of land, which she inherited from her father John Layson, to Charles D. Lenox for $1000. Then on 17 August, 1830, Oliver A. Forsythe sells goods to Charles Lenox for $1 as his portion of $90 owed to Henry Bridges. Neither of these last two references is written in Oliver's hand, and both may have been a mistake by the county clerk, Thomas P. Smith, who also appears to have added an 'e' to the end of the name. My assumption is that Franklin is his middle name, and was passed down through the family. Oliver and Margaret sold land in Bourbon County, Kentucky on October 12, 1829 to Charled D. Lenox for $1000. Then on August 7, 1830 they sold him chattels (property) for $1.00. This indicates that Charles was possibly a relative, since Kentucky did not allow giving property away to relatives. He may have been a brother-in-law. Possibly the Forsyth's were preparing to move, however in the 1872 Plat book for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois, their daughter Eliza stated that came to Illinois in 1834. No record for Oliver is found in Illinois. The estate records for Margaret show her purchasing from Isaac Adair in 1838 and 1839, sugar, tea, coffee, muslin, flax linen, silk, thread, buttons, nails, and medecine for a sick horse. Then in August of 1839, Margaret is buying medicine for 3 persons, including Franklin (presumedly the son) from Dr. Calvin Brown, and also in August of 1839 she purchases 2 coffins, for her son and daughter. On July 6, 1840 she purchaes a coffin for herself. The warrant for her appraisement was issued on September 5, 1840; by this date, she must have passed away. Her estate sale was September 19, 1840 at which time her estate contained the following: 2 steers, 7 cows, 4 horses, 6 sheep, 24 hogs; several acres of corn, oats, and wheat; 2 axes, a hammer, a scythe, gears, 2 hoes, 2 harnesses, a gun, a bridle, 9 bee stands, a plow, books, a spining wheel, a loom, 4 beds, miscellaeous household furniture, a cupboard, a breakfast table, chairs, a work stand, barrells, a bureau, a harrow, 2 flat irons, cooking utensils, pillows, a flax wheel, and stetchers and levis - apparently they wore jeans. |

| Daniel G. Witt married Martha Washington Brewer |

|
Marriage: (13 MAY 1816) Henry County, Virginia |
|
Daniel G. Witt was born on September 30, 1787, in Henry County, Virginia. It is known his middle initial is G, and is possibly George. I suggest this because he named one of his sons George. He was probably the son of William Witt and Elizabeth Haley. He died of a tumor in Chili, Adams, County, Illinois, on May 2, 1855. The 1860 Federal Census Index for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois, finds his wife as head of household. Daniel is buried in Yorkneck Cemetery, near Bowen and Golden, Illinois. He married Martha Washington Brewer on May 13, 1816 in Henry County, Virginia, where she was born, supposedly in 1794, however, the 1850 Federal Census for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois, lists her as age 53, being born then between November 25, 1797 and November 24, 1798. She died, also of a tumor, on March 19, 1876 in Chili, Adams, County, Illinois. She is also buried in Yorkneck Cemetery. Martha was the daughter of William Brewer. Daniel and Martha had 8 children, the oldest five were born in Virginia, and the youngest three in Chili, Adams County, Illinois: William B(rewer?) (2 Jan 1817 - 18 JAN 1885) m. Mary Frances James Lucinda Ann (1820 - bef 1880 ) m. Alpha Forsyth Samuel B(rewer?) (21 Jan 1824 - 27 Jun 1894) m. Elizabeth V. Walters Nancy (21 Jun 1827 - 17 Jun 1854) m1. Abraham Whitemore Strickler, m2. Steven J. Groves Catherine (1829 - ) m. Stewart Howard Strickler Daniel D. (1832 - ) m. Nancy McGinnis John Jackson (27 Nov 1835 - 5 Jan 1897) m. Sarah Witt George W(ashington?) (5 Jan 1838 - 24 Sep 1889) m. Sarah Ann Thompson Daniel served in the war of 1812, and at the time lived near the St. Patrick Court House, in Patrick County, Virginia. He moved his family to Adams County, Illinois between 1829 and 1832. On May 20, 1835, Daniel Witt bought 218.4 acres of land in Adams County, Illinois. He is found in the 1840 Federal Census Index, Federal Population Schedule, for Adams County, Illinois, City of Quincy. Next he is listed in the 1850 Federal Census for Houston Township, Adams County, Illinois on November 25, 1850 as Daniel Witt, age 63, Farmer, 1000 acres, born in Virginia. Martha Witt is listed as age 53, born in Virginia. The children listed are: Daniel Witt, age 18, Farmer, born in Illinois, Jackson Witt, age 15, born in Illinois, George Witt, age 13, born in Illinois, William Witt, age 31, Farmer, 1000 acres, born in Virginia. There is a Daniel Witt listed in the 1830 Federal Census for Russell County, Virginia, but this Daniel and his wife were between 20 and 30, and had 3 daughters less than five years old at the time. This is apparently a different person. There is also a Daniel Witt listed in the 1860 Federal Census for Chili Township, Hancock County, Illinois, but this is apparently his son, as is the entry in the 1872 Plat book for the same township. |

John Arthur McFarland was the son of Joseph McFarland and Margaret White. According to his parents' bible, he was born April 3, 1788 in what must be Greene County, Tennessee, because his parents left Virginia sometime before January 16, 1784 when his father first purchased land in Tennessee. His father purchased land in Greene County, Tennessee by September 20, 1787. "The History of Adams County" is incorrect when they state that he was born in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Joseph A. died on July 24, 1840 in Adams County, Illinois as indicated on his tombstone. His tombstone says he was 51 years, 3 months, and 22 days old. Based on the known birth date, this age is incorrect. He is buried in Hebron Cemetery, Adams County, Illinois. In 1811 he moved to Greene County, Ohio with his parents' family and worked as a farmer. He served in the war of 1812 under General Harrison. He married his first cousin, Rebecca McFarland in Harrison County, Kentucky around 1813. Rebecca McFarland, daughter of William McFarland and Rebecca White, was born July 22, 1793, in Rockbridge County, Virginia. Shortly after her birth, her family migrated to Tennessee, and then in 1796 they moved to near Cynthiana, north of Lexington, Harrison County, Kentucky. She died June 1, 1867, as recorded on her tombstone, in Adams County, Illinois, and is buried alongside her husband. John and Rebecca had 13 children, only 12 of which are known: William Madison (12 Aug 1814 - 11 Sep 1896) m. Eliza McFarland Joseph Hamilton (27 Feb 1816 - 1 Jan 1892) m. Amanda Willard Rebecca (27 Jul 1817 - bef 1910) Margaret Jane (30 Oct 1819 - 20 Jul 1872) Emily (4 Aug 1821 - bef 1910) Priscilla (9 Mar 1823 - 6 May 1901) m. Archibald Powers Benjamin (6 Apr 1825 - bef 1840) Sarah Florence (6 Apr 1826 - bef 1910) Robert V. (30 Jun 1828 - bef 1910) Katherine Eliza (17 Feb 1831 - bef 1910) Daniel Green (26 Sep 1834 - 25 Jun 1895/27 Jun 1905) Frances Sarilda (6 Oct 1836 - bef 1910) The entire family migrated to an area two and a half miles northeast of Camp Point in Adams County, Illinois in August of 1832 or on October 8, 1832. Rebecca is found there in the 1850 Federal census at age 57 and 800 acres of land. She states she was born in Virginia. The following children are listed: Margaret J, age 31, born in Ohio, Emily, age 27, born in Ohio, Benjamin, age 26, a farmer with 800 acres, born in Ohio, Catherine E, age 19, born in Ohio, and Daniel G, age 16, a farmer, born in Illinois. |

Arthur McFarland is probably not a son of Joseph McFarland and Margaret White as some have suggested. He does not appear in their bible record (DAR Magazine, Feburary 1986, page 123), and is not present in Joseph census records. In the 1820 census for Ross Township, Greene County, Ohio, he is found living adjacent to the family (page 140). His is livnig next door to them in 1820, and is interred near the family members buried in the Baptist Cemetery, Cedarville Township, Greene County, Ohio. He was born in or near April, 1788 and is assumed by some researchers to be a twin of their other son, Joseph Arthur McFarland. It is assumed that he was born in Greene County, Tennessee because Joseph Arthur was. According to "Greene County Ohio Cemetery Inscriptions: Baptist Cemetery, Cedarville Township", he died on November 22, 1834 at the age of 46 years, 7 months, in Cedarville Township, Greene County, Ohio. His will was probated in Greene County, Ohio in 1834. He is also found in the 1830 census for Ross Township, Greene County, Ohio (page 378). It is not known whom he married, and the only child known is Eliza (3 Feb 1814 - 6 Dec 1882) m William Madison McFarland. |

Captain David Compton is of unknown descent. He was born on May 10, 1756. He came to America with his two brothers sometime before the Revolution War. In “New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, Vol. I - Extracts”, J. B. Lyon Co, Albany, NY, 1904, page 74, it states that he was living in New York City, New York at an area called the Levies (Malcom) in 1776. It is thought he served in the Revolutionary War. He was only the second military captain in the area. David married Abigail Prindle on March 9, 1779 at Smith's Cove, Monroe Township, Orange County, New York. Abigail Prindle was the daughter of Benjamin Prindle and Hannah Marshall. Abigail died in Orange County, New York, probably in childbirth. David and Abigail had 2 children, both born in Orange County, New York: Elizabeth (1780 - aft 12 June 1805) James (13 Feb 1782 - 11 Mar 1867) m. Phebe Lamoreaux David remarried after Abigail’s death to Phebe Carpenter probably about 1788, and then moved his family to Montgomery County (now Broome County), New York. David settled there four miles above Binghamton, in Chemung, near the river. He ran a tavern there on the Finch farm. One of his brothers, Joseph Compton, settled also near Binghamton, but on the south side of the river. The 1790 Federal Census for New York State, shows David living in Chemung Town, Montgomery County, New York as the head of a household consisting of 1 male over 10 (himself), two females (Phebe and Elizabeth), and 1 male under 10 (James). David and Phebe had three children all born in Chenango Township, Tioga County, New York. Ashmond ( - aft 12 June 1805) John ( - aft 12 June 1805) Sally (1796 - 31 May 1835) m. William Wentz In the 1800 Federal Census for New York State, it shows David living in Chenango Township, Tioga County, New York as the head of a household consisting of 1 male between 26 and under 45 (himself), 1 female between 26 and under 45 (Phebe), 1 female between 16 and under 26 (Elizabeth), 1 male between 16 and under 26 (James), 2 males under 10 years of age (Ashman and John), and 1 female under 10 (Sally). He is living next door to Abraham "Smethkins" (Sneden), whose granddaughter married James. David Compton's will was date June 12, 1805 in Conklin, Broome County, New York. He died in Tioga County, New York on August 24, 1805, and his will was probated on October 25, 1805. The will names his wife: Phebe; sons: James, Ashmond, and John; and daughters: Elizabeth and Sally. His wife, Phebe, was named executrix. The witnesses were James DeHasrt and Daniel Sneden. David Compton is buried in the Layton Cemetery in the town of Kirkwood, Broome County, New York. His tombstone is the oldest dated in that cemetery. |

Nicolas Dahm was the son of Bernard/Carl Dahm and Maria C. Becker. The name of his wife is unknown. According to the 1860 Federal Census for Niles Township, Cook County, Illinois, dated June 30, 1860, he was listed as 83 years old. Therefore he must have been born between June 30, 1776 and June 29, 1777. He died in 1867. He emigrated from Prussia and came to America arriving in New York on August 4, 1851 aboard the Reliance with his son Mathias' family. The last port of departure was Antwerp, Belgium. According to the passenger list, he was then 78. This would place his birth date between Aug 4, 1772 and Aug 3, 1773. The passenger list dates for some of the other family members are known to be incorrect, whereas the 1860 census record for these same persons can be verified against later census records, and is therefore assumed to be more accurate.
