FETTIPLACE: This curious and intriguing name is of Anglo-Norman French origin, and is derived from a nickname or an occupational surname for an Usher, an attendant specifically employed to escort or direct people to the places prepared for them in a nobleman's house, or the court. The name derives from the Anglo-Norman French phrase "fete place", meaning literally "make room". Job descriptive names, such as this, originally denoted the actual occupation of the name bearer, and gradually became hereditary.
Early examples of the surname include: Robert Fetesplace (1227, Bedfordshire); Adam Fetteplace (1260, Oxfordshire); and Walter Feteplace (1273). The name belongs specifically to Oxfordshire, and was the name borne by the 13th century mayor of the City of Oxford, and one Edward Fetiplace was listed in the Register of the University of Oxford in 1546.
The modern surname forms range from Fettiplace, Fetteplace, Fetterplace, Phittiplace, Phettiplace and Phetteplace. The Coat of Arms most associated with the name depicts two silver Chevrons on a red shield; the Crest is a green Griffin's head raised, beaked red.
The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be Thomas Faiteplace, in 1210 in the "Cartulary of Osney Abbey", Oxfordshire, during the reign of King John,1199-1216.
Adam Fettiplace was born about 1203. He is said to have died after 1302; since this range of dates seems unlikely, possibly there was a Adam Fettiplace II. In 1245 he was the Mayor of Oxford, England. In 1253, "Ralph de Cameys junior" sold his Manor of North Denchworth, parish of Hanney, Berkshire, England to Adam Fettiplace (Ashmoleian M.S.S., Bodleian Library, Oxford). In 1261, Adam Fettiplace along with Sir William de Valencia, held the Manor of Wantage in moieties (halves) and "share equally the profits arising from the said manor" (A Gibbons & E C Davey, "Wantage Past & Present", Walker, London (1901) p.69). Adam had two known sons, Philip and Walter.

BIOGRAPHY
Alexander, with his brothers John and Walter and his brother-in-law the Earl of Dunbar, accompanied Louis IX, King of France on crusade. After the death of the Earl of Dunbar Alexander commanded the Scots pilgrims.
On his return to Scotland he found the country broken up into faction after the death of the king, Alexander II. The powerful family of the Comyns headed the so-called national party, and had seized the young king and queen, while two of their lords, Robert de Ross and John de Baliol, had declared themselves Regents.
To counteract the treasonable practices of this confederacy, the Stewart and his brother Walter, Earl of Menteith, his brother-in-law Neil, Earl of Carrick, his nephew Patrick, Earl of Dunbar, and his friend Robert de Brus, Lord of Annandale, joined the party of Henry III of England, the queen's father.
In this they were supported by Alan Durward, Justiciar of Scotland, Malise, Earl of Strathern, and other leading men, the object being not to make their country subservient to Henry, but with his support to break the power and crush for ever the increasing strength and importance of the Comyns. Such a powerful coalition proved too much even for the Comyns, then by far the greatest family in Scotland, and in 1255 new Regents were appointed, among whom were Robert de Brus and the Stewart, and to them and other lords, King Henry undertook to deliver any prince or princess who might be born during the stay of his daughter Margaret, the young Queen of Scots, at his Court.
In 1263 Alexander the Stewart commanded the right wing of the Scottish army at the Battle of Largs, the left being under the leadership of his nephew Patrick, Earl of Dunbar. To that victory, in which the Norsemen under Haco were completely routed, the Stewart and his brother Walter, Earl of Menteith, contributed significantly, after defeating the left wing of the Norse army, they fell upon the rear of the enemy's main body and materially assisted King Alexander who was facing that part of the Danish army.
By the king's orders the Stewart and his brother pursued the enemy into the Western Isles and to the Isle of Man, which they compelled them to surrender and evacuate, and that were then reannexed to the Scottish Crown.
In 1263 Alexander III sent the Stewart to the Court of Henry III of England to demand from that monarch the arrears of the dowry that Henry had promised to pay on his daughter's marriage with the King of Scots.
Alexander the Stewart married Jean, heiress of James, Lord of Bute and died in 1283, leaving two sons, James his successor and Sir John Stewart of Bonkyl, and a daughter Elizabeth.
