BIOGRAPHY
bhomas was born about 1060, the son of Enguerrand I de Coucy, Seigneur de Boves de Coucy, and Ada de Marle. He lost his first wife, Ermengarde de Montaigu, as well as the castle of Montaigu, when this marriage was annulled on grounds of consanguinity. However it has been impossible to establish how they were related to each other as her ancestry is unknown.

With his second wife Ida de Hainault, daughter of Baudouin II, Count of Hainault, and Ida de Louvain, Thomas had two daughters, both of whom would have progeny. After Ida died in 1102, he married Mélesinde de Crécy, daughter of Guy de Crécy, Comte de Rochefort sur Yvelin. They had three children of whom two sons, Enguerrand II and Robert, would have progeny.

Thomas was lord of Coucy, Boves, Marle, La Fère, Crépy and Vervins. There was some doubt as to whether Enguerrand I was really his father (he had repudiated Thomas's mother over her adultery), and it appears that Enguerrand detested his son and sought to disinherit him.

Before 1095 Thomas developed a reputation for rapacious cruelty. In April 1096 he joined the first crusade with his father and alongside the notorious Emicho of Leiningen, persecutor of the Rhineland Jews. He fought with great courage in a number of battles: Nicea (June 1097), Dorylaeum (July 1097), Al-Bara (December 1097), Antioch (June 1098), and Jerusalem in July 1099 he was one of the first Crusaders to enter the city.

Thomas may have been marked by the cross, but he could not switch off the elemental ferocity that had driven him, and many of his comrades, to the gates of the Holy City. Returning to his country with little to show for such a long crusade, Thomas resumed his pillaging and devastation of the regions around Laon, from Amiens to Reims. He was even excommunicated by the pope during a council held in Beauvais in 1114.

In October 1130 he was severely wounded by Raoul I 'the Valiant', comte de Vermandois, during the siege of Coucy ordered by King Louis VI, who wanted to put an end to the ravages of his vassal.

Thomas died of his wounds on 9 November 1130. He was buried under the tower of the abbatial church of Nogent-sous-Coucy, and his body remained there until 3 April 1219, when it was moved to the church built by his grandson Enguerrand III. The chronicler of the time, Guibert de Nogent, abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of Nogent-sous-Coucy, wrote of him that he was the greatest scoundrel of his time.

Money (pg 78) claims she is the daughter of Ernulf de Hesding and Emmelina, but Cokayne (pg 374-375), Cawley, and Weis claim she is the daughter of Patrick de Chaworth and Maud (who was the daughter of Ernulf de Hesdin). Cokayne also shows her dying before her husband who died in 1147. Cawley shows she had 5 children, one of which was born in 1118. She therefore must have been born around before 1102, and therefore could not have been the child of Patrick de Chaworth and Maud.

von Redlich (pg 279) and Planche list Matilda de Perche's parent as Geoffrey, II, Count du Perche, and Beatrix de Montdidier. Weis, lists her as the daughter of Rotrou II and granddaughter of Geoffrey II and Beatrix. It is evident by the line numbers (24, 24A, 25) that Weis added the generation as an addendum to his original work. Weis lists her date of birth as 1105, and since Geoffrey II died in 1100, he could not be her father (if the birth date is correct). Weis lists CP XI App D 112 as a reference. CP does not mention Matilda de Perche. However in the same reference on page 113, it states that Rotrou's wife "Maud was drowned in the wreck of the White Ship, 25 Nov 1120 leaving 2 daughters.(d)". The footnote lists these two daughters as Philippe and Felicie - Matilda is not listed as a daughter of Rotrou and Matilda (Maud).

Cokayne: Richard "m., possibly as 2nd wife, Alice, whose parentage is not known ... His widow married Alexander de Piro. ... William and his brother Richard [sons] appear to have been children at their father's death. This, combined with the way in which they are referred to by their mother, suggests they were probably the issue of a later marriage."

This wording is confusing, as to who Richard or alice outlived the other. For Richard to have two children by a later marriage, implies he outlived his wife. For Alice to be a widow who remarried, implies that she outlived her husband.

The Complete Perrage lists Thurstan de Montfort as related to Thurstan de Bastenbourg (d. 1097) and his wife Albereda, the first cousin of Henry, 1st Earl of Warwick. Since Thurstan de Montfort's grandson Thurstan was born about 1184, and his son Henry married his sister-in-law and brother's widow, and therefore likely married quite young, we can assume that Thurstan de Montfort was probably born between 1135 and 1140. This would place him 3 to 4 generations younger than Thrustan de Bastenbourg and Albereda.

Langston places her as a daughter of Hugh III, Duke of Burgundy.

Cawley: "The Inventory of the State Archives of Turin mentions a document dated 1230 which refers to the marriage of Comte Amédée with "Marguerite daughter of André dauphin, comte de Viennois", but without giving the context (marriage contract, appointment of proxy etc.). Although her mother is not named in this source, Marguerite must have been born from her father's first marriage given the estimated date of birth of her daughter Beatrix. The wife of Comte Amédée IV is named Marguerite de Bourgogne, daughter of Hugues III Duke of Burgundy [Capet] & his second wife Béatrix Dauphine de Viennois in the 18th century Histoire de Dauphiné but this appears to be disproved by the source referred to above."
